Every Monday morning, Jefferson County’s Board of County Commissioners meeting begins with a half hour of public comment.  Those wishing to comment are limited, by a “traffic” light, to three minutes.  (You’ll see this cute device from time to time when you watch the video clips.)

Yesterday, November 9, 2009, the chair of the BoCC flirted with the First Amendment . . . you know, the one which reads:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

There’s no way to adequately describe what took place.  You really have to watch it as it happened.  Can an elected official legitimately . . . and very subjectively . . . abridge a citizen’s exercise of a First Amendment right in the name of “decorum”?  The video is available at:

The first eight clips are from November 9th’s public comment, and are presented in reverse order in the index.  Start with the first one in the sequence and work your way back through all of them.  You’ll note that there are grievances in need of redress, and that there are problems within county government that bring severe disadvantage to those who live outside of Port Townsend, the only incorporated city in a county with more land mass than the state of Rhode Island.

I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether or not there’s a problem here, but I encourage you to spread this sequence of video clips as far and wide as possible.  There’s nothing like the light of day to start the process of bringing government into compliance within the boundaries of its constitutionally derived roles, authorities, boundaries, and the expectations of the governed.

Dear family, friends, citizens and business associates:

Free speech is becoming a rare commodity in Jefferson County.  If you use the words "Al Scalf" or "Port Townsend" you could be gaveled down by Commissioners Sullivan.  Watch with amazement the control of government power gone wrong in yesterdays BOCC meeting during what was thought to be Public Comment.  I highly recommend that you watch all the videos in sequence starting with Tom Thiersch and ending with Jim Tracy.
